I specialize in navigating life changes, chronic illness, grief, and loss, as well as assisting you to deepen authentic personal expression with yourself and with others.
Hi, I'm Karissa Boser, a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) based in Gainesville, Florida, specializing in sexuality, identity, and chronic illness counseling. My academic journey began at Northern Michigan University where I completed my Bachelor's degree in Sociology and a Master's in Public Administration. Furthering my education, I pursued a Master's degree in Counseling from Northwestern University, solidifying my expertise in human behavior and therapeutic practices.
As a sociologist by training, I understand the profound influence societal structures have on individual identities and experiences. Combining this with my Counseling degree, I've developed a unique perspective on the intersection of mental health and societal impacts. My degrees and experience equip me with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively guide my clients on their mental health journeys.
My therapeutic style leans towards a psychodynamic approach. I invite clients to delve into their past experiences and unconscious thoughts to help them understand how these aspects can shape their present behaviors, emotions, and relationships.
Over time, I have cultivated a specialization as a sex and identity counselor, focusing on individuals living with chronic illnesses. I believe that irrespective of health challenges, everyone deserves a fulfilling sexual life and a secure sense of identity. My goal is to help clients navigate the intricacies of maintaining healthy sexual relationships and a confident self-identity amidst their health struggles.
Currently, I am working towards my certification from the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (AASECT), a goal that I am deeply passionate about. This certification will not only enhance my credentials but also improve my ability to support my clients more effectively.
In all aspects of my professional journey, my mission remains clear and unchanging: to provide understanding, compassion, and high-quality mental health care. As I continue my practice in Gainesville, I bring with me a unique blend of expertise, passion, and dedication, making every interaction with my clients meaningful and transformative.
Creating a safe space is a crucial foundation for personal growth and development. Within this nurturing environment, individuals can explore their thoughts, emotions, and past experiences without fear of judgment, fostering a sense of trust and openness. Personally, I have experienced the power of psychodynamic therapy in this safe space, which has enabled me to delve deep into my subconscious, unraveling patterns and beliefs that held me back. Through this introspective approach, I gained profound insights into myself, facilitating meaningful changes in my life. As a result, I have been able to make significant strides towards achieving my goals, breaking free from limiting patterns and embracing a more authentic and fulfilling path. The transformational potential of this therapeutic method within a safe space is truly remarkable, both as a practitioner and someone who has experienced its impact firsthand.
